Dead pathogens continue to accumulate on the electrostatic plates. To maintain filter efficiency, these electrostatic plates must be replaced periodically, increasing maintenance costs. Electrostatic precipitators also release ozone, a reactive gas that can damage the lungs.
Ultraviolet Air Purifiers – These air purifiers use ultraviolet light to kill bacteria floating in the air. Some UV air purifiers emit ozone, so check before you buy this type of purifier.
Ozone generator: An air purifier equipped with an ozone generator absorbs odors. The high levels of ozone emitted by these air purifiers make them unsuitable for use in rooms for the next 24 hours and are therefore commonly used in hotels. Exposure to low levels of ozone can cause chest pain, coughing, and shortness of breath. Prolonged exposure damages the lungs and exacerbates respiratory problems.
