The CDC made a public statement in April that cloth face masks help to slow the spread of COVID-19. It has been shown that it dramatically decreases infections and is widely used successfully in East Asia - good examples of containment of COVID19 with the help of masks is Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, etc. Masks are a safety accessory, similar to seatbelts in cars. Years ago those were considered a nuisance, today very few drive without one.
