The people of San Jose spoke loud and clear at yesterday’s meeting. Defund the police. Invest in community. Make this your new mantra.

Defund the police immediately. Our people deserve their tax dollars to be spent on community, health and life—rather than the arm of state violence represented by the San Jose Police Department.

I support Mayor Liccardo's position regarding SJPD funding. I remember what it was like when the Great Recession gutted SJPD: crime went up, response times went up (if they even responded), and residents grew vocally frustrated. SJPD is one of the most efficient law enforcement units of any large U.S. city, policing a city of one million with some 950 officers, roughly 95 for every 100,000 residents, versus San Francisco at 264, and Oakland at 176, even Palo Alto has more...117. Fund SJPD!

As Chair of the Friends of Bascom Library and a Director on the San Jose Public Library Foundation, I respectfully request that you NOT cut any hours from the San Jose Library System. Our libraries are social services necessity in San Jose. They are vital force for equity and justice for all members of the community. Cutting the Library’s budget, especially for education, workforce development, and digital inclusion, will slow progress and reduce equity. RESTORE THE LIBRARY BUDGET!
