Reform is the correct response, defunding is NOT the right thing to do. Please stay the course! Also be careful when Camden, NJ is suggested as a model of defunding. Camden restructured and saved money but in the years they have added to the police department. Keep in mind that Camden has a population of 77,000 in 10 square miles. Quite different that San Jose with 970, 000 folks spread over 180 square miles.
Learn but don't expect to copy...Thanks for all your work

Hours of public comment and hundreds of letters have made the stance of the people clear. Do not make cuts to programming that makes our communities stronger, like the Library, and Community Service Officers. Now’s the time to restore or increase Library funding, not decrease it. The San Jose Public Library to helps to restore equity, justice and will continue to provide solutions as a key COVID-19 second responder. Please amend your budget to make cuts elsewhere.

As proven by nearly 4 hours of public comment on Monday, this city is demanding that you, City Council, defund SJPD and reallocate the funds to community services that better support San Jose's citizens. Listen to your constituents, be the leaders we are asking you to be, create a safer city. Defund SJPD!

Something has fundamentally shifted. If you react with “reforms” instead of deep, thoughtfully considered change you will be on the wrong side of history. It is time. Pay attention to the coalition of people associated with SV De Bug & the People’s Letter. Pay attention to the 100s of thoughtful comments & letters. Read A S Vitale’s “The End of Policing.” Consider how other cities & states are responding. We need a new way. Listen. Then act like leaders. Boldly re-imagine public health & safety.

As Chair of the Friends of Bascom Library and a Director on the San Jose Public Library Foundation, I respectfully ask you not to cut any hours from the San Jose Library System. The San Jose Libraries are essential to our underserved community for education, work development, and equity. Please fully restore the libraries' budget. It is an investment that we cannot afford to make.
