The way the SJPD are currently structured is with a proclivity towards violence as a first solution. This is silicon valley, a place of innovation. I find it difficult to believe that we cannot rethink how to structure our police department. How to guide the SJPD from viewing their own citizens as the 'other.' It was shameful to see how the SJPD escalated violence, forgot their training and adopted an action-hero wannabe mindset to attack their own citizens. Fire Jared Yuen. Black Lives Matter.
SJPD put out a tweet where they stand on the #8cantwait campaign. Apparently these are not enough due to the excessive force and escalation the SJPD used during the protests. The chief's excuses about not being perfect/emotions running high are not acceptable and seem to conveniently be left out of the conversation when they apply to the people they are sworn to protect. It's been an embarassment as someone who was born and raised in San Jose. Look up what defunding actually is and apply it.
I am outraged by the violent police force used during local protests in support of the Movement for Black Lives. How will you hold officers accountable and seek justice for injured citizens like Derrick Sanderlin? I stand with many antiracist members of our community that have called for ongoing measures to defund San Jose Police. These funds should be invested in, but not limited to, social services, mental health, and community education that is led by and directly benefits Black residents.
Dear City Council,
Which EVIDENCE-BASED solutions are being considered (or are active) to reduce police violence in SJ?
E.g. 1) Demilitarization (https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/2053168017712885)
2) More restrictive use of force polices (http://useofforceproject.org/#review)
3) More accountable police union contracts (https://www.checkthepolice.org/#project)
4) Alternatives to police in crime prevention (https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/0003122417736289)
Thank you
