I live and am raising my Arab American son in San Jose. After decades of broken promises and empty reforms, Black and Brown communities continue to be the targets and victims of police violence, abuse, incarceration, as the budget for SJPD balloons at the expense of community programs. We must address the urgent needs of San Jose's Black and Brown communities. We are demanding that the City of San Jose defund the police and fully fund community services for all of our safety. Thank you.
I oppose the planned $43 million police training and academy facility. I support defunding the police and reallocating funds for peaceful solutions like social services, after school programs, mental health, drug and alcohol treatment programs, and affordable housing. People are suffering and need solutions that heal and support wellness.

I am opposed to more spending on the police alone. I work with many of the homeless coming into the Recovery Cafe and, though the police have tried their best to work with the mentally ill on our streets, it shouldn't be their job.
Money ought to be spent on integrating NAMI and other mental health care advocates into police responses.
Money ought to be spent providing extensive NVC training for our police and first responders.
Reduce funding for military style training, increase compassion.
I live in San Jose. I’m writing this comment in opposition of the $43 million dollar police training facility on the agenda. With the current budget shortfalls and the actions of the SJPD against the people of San Jose during the recent protests, San Jose needs to rethink its strategy for policing and move to funding community service instead of a failing police system. Until the SJPD proves changes have happened, the city council should stand with the people of San Jose to demand change.

I am writing in support of the call for San Jose to defund the police and invest in community, as outlined in the Silicon Valley De-Bug's 6/9 Letter to the Mayor, City Council, and City Manager (https://bit.ly/2Fso3WF). The petition highlights specific dimensions of the police force to stop funding and/or commit to not funding and calls to allocate funds to specifically support Black and Brown communities and to create/fully fund community services as alternatives to policing.
I'm Diane Solomon, a life-long resident of District 6. Do NOT fund a new San Jose Police Department (SJPD) training center or new SJPD anything. Wait until you have your new SJPD Police Chief. SJPD has a horrible record of NOT preventing crimes, NOT solving crimes, and using excessive and inappropriate force. For example, with over 600 rapes in 2018 they cleared only about 20 and the record shows too many people shot to death inappropriately.Thank you!
San Jose City Council needs to take the demands of activists asking to defund the SJPD seriously. Yes, we cannot simply disband the police. But band-aid reforms are not workable either. The SJPD needs to be reduced in size, with many of their functions going to folks such as social workers, public health workers, etc. Let's the SJPD help, from people who aren't trained in this militaristic, us vs. them mentality that has been so vividly and shamefully on display from the SJPD lately.
