Clearing out these encampments is morally wrong. The CDC clearly states that doing so could cause further harm to our unhoused community, which last I checked was part of San Jose. Your job as city council is to serve all members of the city, not just the ones with the loudest voices. Instead of clearing them out, offer them vaccines and ways to integrate back into society with good jobs, health care, etc. Instead of just pushing them out and letting them suffer.

Society has an obligation to assist those in need but does not have to allow unsanctioned camping and the resulting refuge to accumulate and fester.
Sweeping encampments is not only cruel, but also will NOT be an effective solution. In addition to this, not completing the census of the unhoused population will set us back YEARS we already only do a census every two years, which in my opinion is not nearly often enough. And skipping it one year means that there’s a possibility we will lose federal funding for already underfunded organizations and we will lose out on valuable data that will help us help the unhoused in our community.
Sweeping encampments and carrying out abatements during a pandemic winter is both utterly cruel and senseless. Unhoused people are among the most vulnerable and least likely to be vaccinated in San Jose. Is the city going to take responsibility for the deaths of unhoused people due to police officers not taking proper COVID precautions (as vaccinated people can still carry the virus) and the harm done to unhoused people in upending their lives and stealing their possessions? No more abatements!
Do not do any more sweeps or breaking up of encampments. They exacerbate homelessness because residents lose important resources, documents and their home base! How can people be expected to fight against poverty when they are uprooted and their possessions thrown away? The police often throw away people's possessions, declaring them trash. Sweeps and destroying encampments only hurt people. Put your time, money, and effort into public housing and rental vouchers, not criminalizing poverty.
