I strongly support Councilmember Mahan's proposals for San Jose's Animal Care Center, to restore operations and staffing to effective levels. I support additional funding to prevent unnecessary suffering and death of animals in the community, to improve conditions at the shelter, alleviate staffing turnover and be better equipped to meet the needs of the animals in our community. I urge Councilmembers to consider the immediate urgency and long-term benefits -and approve these requests.

Animal care needs to be a larger priority. Converting a couple part time positions to full time roles and adding more middle managers does not provide an adequate increase the staffing ability to care for the growing number of animals they see. The lack of TNR programs during the pandemic, the increasing wealth inequality increasing homelessness means more needs to be done now before this problem grows. TNR expanded, additional vet services for low cost neuter, funds for emergency care.
