I am a concerned citizen of San Jose. The animal shelters are overcrowded, and there doesn't seem to be enough funding to support the needs of our community. Dogs and cats are being turned away, and some of the programs such as TNR (Trap, Neuter, Release) for managing growing stray cat populations have been limited or put on pause. I think that a valid solution to this problem would be to offer more funding and support to the TNR program in order to target the problem of animal overpopulation.
I appreciate the recent staffing and budget changes and recognition of the important work that Animal Services does from the Mayor, City Council and City Manager, and look forward to the return of services in the future. Even if services are able to fully return at some point, I am concerned about the shelter's capacity of care and ability to adequately provide services to the size and population of the community that the shelter is required to support, even when fully staffed.
