San Jose Animal Care & Services is critical to the well being of our residents and the animals its staff serve. Fully funding and staffing the ACS needs to be a priority for our city. The animals that find new homes help to improve the quality of life for the adoptive families and the animals. The ACC is the fist place people look for lost animals, it must have space and staff to serve this need as well and caring for and finding homes for surrendered animals.
The animal shelter needs to be a higher priority for the city. While steps have been taken to remedy challenges caused by the pandemic, more needs to be done to stabilize staffing levels, resume the TNR program, and to build partnerships with rescues. Building community trust means that lost pets entering the shelter need more time for their humans to find them. To you they may just be animals, but to many of us they are cherished family. Please strive to make our shelter a true No Kill shelter.
This is for SJ Animal Care: We can all agree that if we can reduce the population of dogs and cats, resources would be stretched further. It would seem that the priority should fill the AHT spot. Why is that taking so long? If we can fill some of these positions the spay and neuter program should be considered.
2: Address the overturn of people leaving. Is it management, pay, or other factors? I believe a task force should look into it. Maybe management needs to be looked at.
I am really shocked at the lack of support for these animals. The funds are there, they just need to be prioritized for animal
welfare. I see other cities with half the resources San Jose has doing a wonderful
job at rescuing and re-homing animals. Their euthanasia rates are very low. They have strong relationships with their rescues and community to enable them to save more lives.
Many cities sponsor spay and neuter clinics to keep the unwanted pet population down. Sad commentary on our city
Please start using your rescues to support your crisis at the shelter or please explain why this is not happening. Also, taking some TNR’s a couple of days a week should be done as good faith for the community and for our cats.
Please help the animal shelter with proper support, funding, and resources. San Jose is a big dog city and the state of our shelter is an embarrassment. No one wants to fund it until their dog is lost. That’s not good enough! They need help now!
I am concerned with the amount of space available to help homeless pets. I am also extremely concerned about our TNR program. If we are not fixing the cats now we are about to have an explosion of cats in the future.
I have been caring for a colony for 33 years. Daily. I pay for all the food, trapping and medical expenses. We need funding for ferals/spay/neuter services. We need caring and empathetic people at the shelter. We need to make the environment over so people can and will volunteer. It is a disgrace that there are no humane services there and animals are being turned away and murdered in mass. Please fund services
Please increase funding for our animal shelter if possible. There are so many people who post on NextDoor that they need help with spaying or need to give away puppies or kittens. I had my neighbor's cats spayed at the Curtner Clinic and the cost for each cat is almost $1,000 dollars. The cheapest vet in San Jose is the Aborn Clinic and that is around $300 dollars but it takes months to get an appointment .
Please fund, assist, subsidize the animal shelter, staff, Vet, TNR, supplies this has been sorely NEGLECTED with the excuse of Covid19 that’s not helpful to all the communities & stray/feral animals left to fight on their own. STOP this madness & get out communities back on track with REAL SUPPORT not words TAKE ACTION to make things RIGHT AGAIN.
The shelter is in a crisis. People and animals are being turned away. Healthy, young animals are being euthanized. The shelter is no longer a safe haven for the animals of San Jose. Most brought to the shelter have already been failed by humans in some way, yet most continue to have hope and live to please humans. Please return to compassion for those with no voice. It is unconscionable that we live in an area of such wealth and resources, yet allocate such a pittance to our precious animals.
Yes , the city needs to be supporting the animal shelters in San Jose all it can. We are the animals Voice, for we are not China or other countries. A life is a life.and a precious one at that. The City needs to step up and help all it can.
I find it really hard to comprehend the difficulty in hiring staff. Is it because the salary is too low for the amount of work that needs to be done? The staff left to San martin shelter so obviously the new shelter doesn't have issue with staffing so why os SJACC having the issue?
As a former volunteer at SJACC, I was shocked to hear that the TNR program has been inactive since April 2022. We have huge issues now finding low cost TNR for stray cats, and most require appointments, which is hard to do, as it's hard to predict if a cat will get trapped or not. People get discouraged, cats multiply. Sad that in the heart of the Silicon Valley, an area with so much wealth, we lag behind with animal services.
I'm part of a rescue group that works with the San Jose Animal Shelter. I urge the committee to recognize the various challenges noted, and secure additional funding, resources, staffing. Please staff volunteer & foster coordinators so that the members of the public can volunteer safely, effectively and happily. Please consider active marketing and fundraising - e.g. "featured pet" in local newspapers. The staff have been unresponsive to such ideas so far, likely because they're under-resourced.
The SJ shelter is one of the most poorly run shelters I've ever seen & it has been for years. There's no reason why the only animal shelter for a city this large & this wealthy isn't fully staffed & offering low-cost & no-cost services. Not to mention no animal should be turned away.Animal control is an absolute nightmare, with no response the majority of the time.
The problem with the shelter starts at the top. It needs to be well funded, well run with staff being paid competitive wages.
