Although I agree that the issues that KIPP SJC have faced are challenging, I don't think that police are the people that we need to address homelessness near schools. We need the community (housed and unhoused) to come together to find solutions for these issues. Expelling unhoused neighbors near schools will not solve the underlying issues. How can we connect these people to services instead?
This issue matters to me as someone who is aware of how limited affordable housing is in this county.
Using law enforcement for encampments will not address the systemic causes of homelessness, nor will it make things safer for housed or unhoused people.
There need to be public responses that are made with the insight & experiences of unhoused people. Non-police city workers deserve more funding to broaden life-saving interventions. Lastly, we need to build more permanent affordable homes.
I am a member of St. Thomas of Canterbury,Diocese of San Jose, SURJ Sacred Heart, I must urge you to approach the problems of Homelessness through service and love of neighbor as not mere piety, but effective public policy. We cannot choose our neighbors. The needs of students and the needs of other people in our cities cannot be effectively addressed in isolation or by assigning law enforcement to address issues that cry out for social services.
