I'm a member of SURJ at Sacred Heart and I SUPPORT the proposed rent suspension. I urge you to vote YES. City Council should suspend rents before tenants are forced to make impossible choices between health and housing. Without a rent pause families will have to make tough choices on whether to continue going out into the community to work despite the public health orders. This is a bill we'll all be paying in our city's social and economic well being down the line.
As of April 2020, most of my tenants paid (95+%). The ones did not pay are the SAME problem tenants that did not pay for the last 2+ years.
Agenda item 20-452 Rent Suspension
My mother-in-law, age 96, needs the rent from her home to help pay the rent at her assisted living facility. A 90-day suspension is ludicrous - especially when you entertain the idea of these tenants NOT paying the rent they owe for three months back at any point. When the city council pays the property taxes, insurance bills, repairs, and living expenses for the landlords, you might get some support.
i'm part from the comitte mujeres fuertes of next door solution and we see the necesity to say yes because all people is impacting for de covi-19
I am writing to urge you to pass an urgency ordinance pausing rent for the many tenants in San Jose who are losing their incomes due to the COVID-19 crisis. San José’s eviction moratorium is keeping families housed, but families who are relying on this protection and unable to work or otherwise replace their income will fall into insurmountable debt and face displacement once the COVID-19 crisis is over unless City Council also suspends their rent.
Strong oppose !
I oppose rent suspension, landlords have to pay bills and mortgages too.
I rent rooms for $315/month close to SJSU. I am retired and depend on the rent to supplement my social security. I already pay the same amount per room I rent for the rent adjudication program as a landlord renting a two bedroom apartment for $3000/month. Please don't assume that all landlords are rich corporations gouging renters for every last dollar.
I am a property owner in San Jose who has worked hard to care for my house and the residents who call my house home. I know a lot of tenants got impacted by COVID-19. However, this is same for property owners. We got mortgage to pay as well，not to mention property tax, insurance and maintenance.People who lost their job can get 40% of their salary, plus $600 per week. It is not fair. We need help to pay our bills too. I oppose the "rent suspension"
