This is an unfair act! By asking landlords to absorb the cost is not a solution! Both tenants and landlords are impacted the same way. The Govt should provide more assistance to people who are impacted! Do not shift your responsibility to the landlords!
5th Amendment says: "nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation". Every high school student knows we have this right. Robbing our properties to provide public housing is outrageous. Check the US constitution before you vote my dear council members. I will unite with all San Jose Landlords to sue the City if this gets passed.
This proposal is unconstitutional, unfair, and trying to divide the community at this difficult time. The bill sponsor should be ashamed of him/herself.
House owners are affected by the COVID-19 as well. We have to pay mortgages, property taxes, insurance.
I am doing my best to reduce rent payments, waive late fees. City government should pay the landlord directly if city decides to waive rent payment. It’s pure robbery, unlawful, unfair decision from the city government.
House owners are affected by COVID-19 as well. They also need money to raise children, pay mortgage and facing the job security problem in this special period. Rent is a big amount to most of the house owners for covering their costs. They need support by the government as well, but not being put into a harder situation like this. Please be fair and keep the equal rights for everyone!
Landlords and tenants get hit by COVID-19 equally! Who is going to pay my kids college tuition, apartments and their livings? Some parents chose to invest 529 saving to pay their kids for college, we chose to invest in housing. does city think about to rob their college fund? If not, why just punish landlords? This is so unlawful and unfair!
I am a rental property owner. I am doing my best to help tenants. Do not destroy my livelihood. Property right is a Constitutional right. See the 5th amendment. Property right is a human right. See Article 17 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
To shift government responsibility to the shoulders of housing providers is dividing our community in the pandemic when we need unity. This act is cowardly and shameful.

NO, NO, NO! strongly oppose! Landlord are just like tenants, they are struggling too. Without the rent coming in, how are they supposed to survive and pay their mortgage payment!
I am realtor and mother of two. I haven't got income for two months due to covid-19. I have to pay property tax, insurance, and mortgage for my rental. I also have to pay my two children's college eduction. If we can not collect rental to pay bills, we might default on our mortgage which will impact San Jose City in whole. Nobody will want to buy or keep rental property in San Jose. Not every tenants cannot pay rental, this is should be between landlord and tenant.
this is insane. if it's true, it means that l and you can go to restaurants and eat and leave without pay. better to drive off a new Mercedes from a dealer today without pay. it is stealing, stealing !!
Strong against it!!! It is not landlord's responsiblity to help renters unless they voluntarily choose to do so. Landlords have their own bills and financial situations to take care. Government may help those including renters, landlords, and anyone with equal right and urgent need for help, by their applications. Not every renters are affected by the virus. It is unfair and unconstitutional for some people to take advantage of other people's hard earned money and investment.

This is completely absurd! The domino effect of this proposal is catastrophic and I am vehemently opposed to this.

It is unconstitutional, violate contractual rights and private property rights. We will bring lawsuit against the City if it would be passed.
This proposal is not reasonable and will cause much damage on community
